House Hunting

So after much deliberation, Christopher and I have decided to buy a house.* Cheers all 'round! I've finally got the FH on board, which makes me very happy. My parents and I used to rent when I was younger, so I have no desire to repeat the experience if I can avoid it.

Unfortunately, our house shopping experience is going to be a bit one-sided. Since I don't have my Fiance Visa yet, and we aren't made of money, I won't be able to go see the houses before we make an offer. All I can do is look at the websites and pray the FH and his father make a good decision. No pressure or anything, LOL!

At the moment, we have one favourite that I nicknamed Castle because it's a big brick Tudor and, you guessed it, looks like a castle. There are a few others that have potential, but we'll just have to wait and see.

However, while looking at some house pictures the other day, I came across the photo below. I don't know about you guys, but I wonder if the creeper in the window comes with the house, LOL! Not sure that's a real selling feature for me....

So there you have it! I'm rather scared about buying a house, but I imagine I'd be a fool not to be.  When did you buy your first house? Did you have troubles finding one that worked for you?

*We've waffled back and forth on this for quite a while. Houses in Virginia are incredibly cheap by Albertan standards, so it just seems wise to buy now while we can. However, we were worried about taking on too much responsibility right off the bat. And yet, that seems to be how we do things lol.

**FH = Future Husband.

***I make no claim to the above picture. I found it on Realtor.com while scrolling through houses.

Who knows, Natalie? Ye could find yourself a bonny Highlander ghost in that wee castle. ;-)

It's a big step, but I think the two of you have good heads on your shoulders, so you should be fine. When I bought my first house, I had no clue. I actually bought the first house I looked at and didn't negotiate on the price or anything. I never got a home inspection. I didn't even have anyone who knew more than me check the house out before I signed the paperwork. Needless to say, I was a dork, and I paid for my own ignorance. Like I said, the two of you are smart, stable people and you'll do fine. =o)

Have you tried hotpads.com? They have an awesome map-based search for properties.

Beth- Yeah, that's what my mum has been saying too.

OMG! Didn't you have a realtor? It's their job to help guide you through the whole buying process! I've watched HGTV enough that I refuse to buy a house without a home inspection and a realtor backing me up--but I imagine that's still a relatively new thing to do, all things considered.

No, I have't tried that, but I'll go look at it today! Thank you for sharing =)

Buying a house in this market is a wise move. Just stay within your budget and you won't get over your heads.

The first place my DH and I bought was a small condo in foreclosure. There were two other offers, which made for some tense moments. I wish we still had that place as a rental property, but we needed to use the money from the sale as a down payment for our new house.

Jen- Yeah, I agree. When we crunched some of the numbers and realized buying was cheaper than renting...that's when we decided to just go ahead and buy a place.

As someone coming from a very wealthy economy (my province is actually making more money now then ever before), it shocks me how cheap the housing market is in Virginia. The houses we're looking at are MASSIVE compared to my family's house lol.

Yikes! I can't imagine how tense that was. I really hope something like that doesn't happen to us *knocks on wood* LOL!

LOL whose shadow is that? The chandelier looks good. So, so far the castle-looking house interests you most. That's great, you'll be the Queen and Christopher's the King. :P Anyway, I wish you can post some pictures of this Castle. I wonder how enormous this house is. By the way, country houses in 17th to 20th centuries are referred to as castles by the people of that time.

Calvin- I have no idea. It was from a picture on realtor.com lol. If we buy Castle, I will definitely post pictures of it =) The house isn't all that big (just under 1700sq ft) but for the price (125K) it's a really good deal.
