Stopping In

Hello everyone!

I just thought I'd pop in for a quick visit, since I haven't posted on here in a while. As some of you may already know, January has been a really tough month for my family. Not only did I lose a friend back home, but Granddad died. There have also been four other deaths in the family since then, and although we weren't close to them, it is always hard to hear about such sad days. We are trying to stay positive, but of course we have our good days and our bad days.

In positive news, we had our first weekend off since the end of November, which was lovely. We didn't have anywhere to go or anyone we had to see. It was quite an extraordinary feeling for us!

I've been writing a lot more again. I'm more than halfway through my second draft of AHR. It's taking a while, mainly because I'm using my first draft as detailed notes rather than a finished scene. I'm rewriting a large majority of the last half of the book, which takes time. Besides, I refuse to rush anymore. A first draft should be written quickly (so you can get all of your ideas down right away), but at some point I have to let my inner editor out (before she kills me). Even still, I'm hoping to be done and ready to query by spring. We shall see!

Along the same lines as above, I've been writing at Starbucks a lot more. I never wanted to try the popular coffee shop because 1). back home we have Tim Hortons, and it feels like a betrayal to go to the overpriced American chain, and 2). because it was always expected of English majors and writers to be the indie types who hang out at coffee shops.  Yes, yes, I know, not good reasons, but I just had no interest before. In university I drank smoothies, not coffee. In fact, I still drink smoothies, not coffee. But I decided to try it a few months ago to get out of a rut I was in, and to my shock, it worked! The delicious smells, the comfy chairs... I can put my headphones on and disappear into my book within seconds. My husband, wonderful, wonderful man that he is, has started encouraging me to go more than once a week, and he's taken to joining me! I write and he sits there and does work for Scouts, or his job, or he just plays games on his laptop or PS Vita. We stay for just over an hour, and I get tons of work done. It almost feels like a nice little date night out, though it didn't cost us anything (my mother-in-law gave me a handful of Starbucks cards she's received over the years as a teacher, but hasn't used!).

My parents finally booked their tickets to come and visit in February. They will be here in less than three weeks now, and I am so excited. I need some parent time! With our busy month in December, and our less-than-stellar beginning to January, both my hubby and I need some fun. We can't wait to see them =)

Well, that's about it for now. I will try and post more often, but my focus is on my family and my writing right now. I hope you guys have had a better start to your month and year!

xoxo

2014 Goals

I've always been a goal-oriented person, so it should come as no surprise that I love making resolutions for the new year. Plus, that means making lists and you all know how much I adore lists.

Here are my goals for 2014.

“Always aim for the Moon, even if you miss, you'll land among the stars.”

- W. Clement Stone

Writing:

--Finish AHR (write a synopsis and query this sucker): I will do this, even if it means I have to tie myself to a chair and force myself.

--Write up detailed plots and query letters for the next two books in my Highlander series: You know, just in case I get the interest of an agent and he/she wants to know what I have planned.

--Write every day: I don't care how much I write a day (well okay, I do, but that's besides the point). Either way, I must write every single day.

--Start a NA book for fun (write synopsis & query letter even if I decide not to query): I want to do this during the Celtic Hearts sprint challenge in January.

--Start the second book in the Highlander series (?) This depends on how the first half of the year goes: Obviously I'm leaving my options open. If I've learned anything from the past two years its that things crop up that you're least expecting. I figure I should prepare for everything.

--Renew Celtic Hearts (?), RWA, and RT: There's a question mark besides Celtic Hearts because I'm not sure whether I will renew in March. I adore the friends I've made, but I'm not sure I'm getting my money's worth.

--Attend RWA Nationals in July (?): This is the same as last year. Unless something changes, this won't happen but I figure I'll put it down anyway.

--Enter the Golden Heart contest in December: This depends on where I am in my writing career, but I'd love it if I could enter.

--Continue to critique for my CP, Jena Lang.

--Read at least 50 books & keep up on my NTR shelf.

--Buy domain name for Murphy and create a website (?): Still not sure what I want to do with this issue. Along the same lines, I need to decide between Murphy and Nicholas. Once these decisions are made, I can order new business cards.

Personal:

--Plan a trip in February with my parents (?): They're coming down for a visit, but I don't know if we'll go anywhere.

--Watch at least 50 movies: Roni Loren does this challenge every year and I thought it sounded entertaining. These movies don't need to be new to me.

--Keep up on birthdays: Again, people seem to love this tradition, so I'll keep it up =)

--Find a job. Boo, hiss.

--Attend my cousin's wedding on June 21st. Help her out however I can.

--Continue to exercise regularly. I would like to reach my goal by July 8th (the one year anniversary).

--Plan a beach trip for me, my hubby, and my parents in August: Squee!

"No Excuses. No Regrets. Never give up. Never surrender."
-Natalie Murphy & Jena Lang

So there you have it. I'm sure I'll think of other things to add, but this is my list for 2014.

What are some of your goals for 2014?

Ordered to protect her, Sevastyan will do anything to possess her as well—on his own wicked terms.

Rules are made to be broken . . .

PhD student Natalie Porter had barely recovered from her first sight of the breathtakingly gorgeous Sevastyan before the professional hit man whisks her away to Russia, thrusting her into a world of extreme wealth and wanton pleasures. Yet all is not as it seems. To remove Natalie from an enemy’s reach, Aleksandr spirits her into hiding. From an opulent palace in Russia to the decadent playgrounds of the mega-wealthy in Paris, the two lovers will discover that even their darkest—and most forbidden—fantasies can come true . . .

The Last Wicked Scoundrel by Lorraine Heath--January 7th
Regency Romance

Especially not around a lady like Winnie. Though undeserving of her touch, he cannot resist. His passion cannot be tamed … even in the face of certain danger.

Winnie, the Duchess of Avendale, never knew peace until her brutal husband died. With William she's discovered burning desire—and the healing power of love. But now, confronted by the past she thought she'd left behind, Winnie must face her fears … or risk losing the one man who can fulfill all her dreams.

The Destiny of Violet & Luke by Jessica Sorenson--January 7th
New Adult Contemporary Romance

Luke Price's life has always been about order, control, and acting tough on the outside. For Luke, meaningless relationships are a distraction-a way to tune out the twisted memories of his childhood. He desperately wishes he could forget his past, but it haunts him no matter what he does.

Violet Hayes has had a rough life. When she was young, she was left with no family and the memory of her parents' unsolved murders. She grew up in foster homes, living with irresponsible parents, drugs, and neglect, and trying to fight the painful memories of the night her parents were taken from her. But it's hard to forget when she never got closure-and she can't stop dreaming about what happened that tragic night. To make it through life, she keeps her distance from everyone and never allows herself to feel anything.

Then Violet meets Luke. The two clash instantly, yet they can't seem to stay away from each other. Although they fight it, they both start to open up and feel things they've never felt before. They discover just how similar they are. But they also discover something else: The past always catches up with you . . .
